During the pandemic year of 2021, a gallery of honor was painted consisting of 24 portraits of the people of Stadswerken Amsterdam (maintenance workers), paying tribute to these hidden heroes who keep the city running.
Artist Pieter Athmer first accompanied each of them for a day ast their jobs, then they came to pose at Athmer’s studio for three mornings – the portraits were painted from life.
All twenty-four paintings are included in this book, along with a short, personal story Athmer wrote in response to the encounters.
