During the 2020 pandemic year, painter Athmer invited friends and acquaintances to be portrayed by him. In doing so, he joins a long tradition of artists who interpret the world (and themselves) through the people around them.<\/p>\n
The portraits were painted in a small cell in former prison the Bijlmerbajes. Such a cell is an impressive place; when you are inside, the outside world no longer seems to exist. There is a special kind of silence that evokes concentration. The lonely cries of grafiti scrawled all around on the walls are the only distraction.<\/p>\n
The book includes reproductions of all 25 paintings plus photographs of the process and accompanying text.<\/p>\n
